WATERS (Watershed Advocacy using Technology and Environmental Research for Sustainability)

About The Program:

Middle School Science teachers and their students will collaborate to explore watershed issues using national scientific data sets & local student collected data to promote advocacy and sustainability.  The course is a dynamic and comprehensive study of water: utilizing a scientific-grade online geographic information systems (GIS) hydrologic modelling tool with low cost stream testing materials and bluetooth (BT) enabled environmental probe ware, supporting a collaborative portal for the sharing of student collected stream research data. The implementation goal promotes geospatial literacy and systems thinking with instructional activities and materials developed around both collecting and sharing local water testing results and a GIS-based web application (Model My Watershed) to analyze real data on environmental impacts as they relate to water quantity, quality, land use, and local socioeconomic impacts.
