Spanish for Heritage Speakers: Instructional Planning for Individual and Societal Engagement

About The Program:

In this interactive workshop, participants explore the connection between language, identity, and Spanish Heritage Speakers (SHS) communities. The social justice implications of SHS linguistic assets will be discussed as we debate the question, “What does it mean to speak Spanish in the US today?” Our point of departure will be the teachers´ own position and experience as Spanish speakers from different origins, nationalities, and backgrounds, reflecting diversity in the Spanish-speaking community. By the end of the two sessions, participants will have completed a lesson plan that engages and empowers heritage students as critical users of Spanish.
