Statewide Programs, Initiatives and Research
In addition to supporting ten regional sites and encouraging them to develop
programs specific to their areas, TCAP supports a number of statewide activities.
STATEWIDE PROGRAMS
Leadership Academy
This event alternates with leadership events as needed. Leaders from all
sites gather in one location to engage in leadership development (e.g.,
standards, assessment team- and community-building, participant observation,
casewriting), activities related to TCAP as a whole (e.g., PDPS
development, on-line work), and arts processes work.
Leadership Events
These five-day events focus on particular issues of importance to TCAP
members and the work of the project. Each site sends representatives to
each event so that all sites move forward together.
INITIATIVES
Diversity Initiatives
TCAP has been involved in a number of activities related to various aspects
of diversity including inclusivity and authenticity of arts content and
access to arts education for all students.
On-line Initiatives
In order to decrease isolation and improve communication among arts educators
in California, TCAP has been involved in a number of on-line initiatives.
Middle Schools Demonstration Program
TCAP works closely with schools that have received MSDP grants from the
California Department of Education for professional development in the
Visual and Performing Arts and offers programs specifically for these
schools.
Literacy Initiative
TCAP has been exploring issues relating to arts literacy. Key questions
include: What is literacy in the arts? How do the arts contribute to cognitive
development as a whole and reading in particular? A successful Arts/Literacy
workshop was conducted last year for K- 3 teachers.
Exploring Documentation and Reflection Processes
TCAP has been active in exploring a number of educational processes that
serve both to document its work and enable members to reflect on TCAP
activities and its effect on their own professional lives. Two of these
processes are case-writing and participant observation.
Arts Assessment
TCAP and its members have been active in exploring various means of arts
assessment. TCAP has held its own events centering on assessment. TCAP
members have also been engaged in their own work and work with other agencies
focusing on assessment in the arts.
Research
TCAP has begun exploring the role of teacher research in arts education
as well as collaborative research between university faculty and k-12
teachers.
