Great News,
On Wednesday January 10, 2001 the California State Board of Education passed the Visual and Performing Arts Standards Pre-K - 12! Powerful statements in favor of arts education followed the vote, with no dissenting votes cast, by various state board members. The large gathering of educators and arts supporters in attendance at the State Board Meeting stood and cheered as the standards were approved.
The standards offer guidelines in all four arts for teachers, students, school districts and the community that recognize the importance of a sequential arts education in a well-rounded education for all students. The arts now join other content areas such as math and language arts with State Board Adopted Standards.
The standards are available on-line through the CDE website or on TCAP's website at /tcap/standards/assessment.html. The standards will be published and available in the near future in hard copy by CDE.
Congratulations and thank you to all of you that have worked so hard to draft and edit the arts standards and to those of you who emailed, faxed, sent letters and provided public comment in support of the standards. A special thank you goes to Patty Taylor and her strong leadership in moving the standards forward.
