News Announcing New Executive Director The Executive Committee of the California Alliance for Arts Education is pleased to announce the appointment of Laurie T. Schell as our new Executive Director. She comes to us as a long-time CAAE board member, friend of arts education, and most recently, as our Interim Executive Director. As the CAAE interim Executive Director, she initiated the process of realigning the organizations policies and procedures with its mission to promote and support quality visual and performing arts education for pre-school through post-secondary students in California schools. She has activated the Board of Directors and begun to move the organization into more productive and action-oriented roles. Laurie has served the arts education profession for over 25 years as
a consultant to nonprofit arts and arts education organizations in the
areas of management, resource and program development, long-range planning,
and coaching for staff and executive officers. Prior to her work as an independent consultant, she was the Executive
Director of Performing Tree, a leading non-profit arts education provider
in Los Angeles. During her tenure at Performing Tree, Ms. Schell directed
the reorganization of operations resulting in a 40% increase in the budget
and a 60% increase in contributed income. Under her leadership, Performing
Tree achieved a new collective vision for the organization, developed
new programs in the areas of sustained artist/teacher partnerships, professional
development for artists and teachers, and program assessment and evaluation,
resulting in a concomitant improvement in the provision of arts education
throughout Southern California. She also initiated and received foundation
support for a planning process to align community arts resources in Los
Angeles County with the needs of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Prior to joining Performing Tree in 1996, she was the Director of Education
for the Portland Symphony Orchestra (Maine) and a dancer and dance educator
for fifteen years. While in Maine she traveled extensively performing
and teaching dance and creative movement in elementary, secondary and
higher education settings. Laurie holds a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford
University and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies with an emphasis in
Dance from Wesleyan University in Connecticut. We are pleased that Laurie has chosen to join the California Alliance for Arts Education in a full-time capacity and look forward to many years of creative and innovative work.
