APPLICATION PROCESS FOR CALIFORNIA TEACHERS
Steps to take if you are interested in becoming Nationally Board Certified:
  1. Request an NBPTS application or call 1-800-22-TEACH. Applications for the 2000-2001 administration of National Board Certification are available starting May 1, 2000 at no charge. The assessment fee for the 2000-2001 school year is $2,300.

  2. Complete the application and send it with a nonrefundable check for $300 payable to:

    NBPTS
    c/o Bank of America, Illinois
    P.O. Box 99406
    Chicago, IL 60693

NBPTS will mail you the portfolio materials once they have received both your application and the $300 nonrefundable payment. Payment may be made by institutional check, personal check, or money order. The application and initial payment must be received by December 1, 2000. Applications received December 2, 2000 through December 31, 2000 must include a late fee payment of an additional $200. After the December 31, 2000 deadline, no applications for 2000-2001 will be accepted.

Sending in your application and check early will ensure that you receive your portfolio materials soon enough to get a head start on the portfolio. We highly recommend that 2000-2001 candidates order standards and portfolio materials during the summer of 2000.

  3. Contact your district office to tell them of your intentions and to determine whether the district plans to support National Board candidates.

  4. Decide if you are going to apply for the Candidate Subsidy Program. To apply for this subsidy, candidates must already have sent in their NBPTS application and $300 nonrefundable application fee. The Candidate Subsidy Program provides $1,000 of the $2,300 application fee for candidates who are selected. Applications are due September 29, 2000. To get a copy of the Candidate Subsidy Program Application, please click here.

Candidates wil be notified if they have been selected to receive a subsidy by October 31, 2000.

  5. Investigate other local options for funding support. For example, to offset the costs of the original $300 application fee, candidates may apply for a teacher scholarship offered through a local Target Store. Contact the Human Relations Department or the Target website to find more information. Teacher Scholarship Applications will be available at the Target website in summer of 2000.

  6. If your district provides support to candidates, participate in these support activities. Explore options for developing or joining a candidate support network that will help you to maximize what you take from the process. Working with Nationally Board Certified Teachers may be very helpful. Go to the listing of California districts that provide incentive and support programs at the NBPTS website.

  7. Contact your regional Professional Development Consortium Director at your county office of education to get assistance for an orientation meeting and/or support for candidates.

  8. Investigate other university-based and statewide Candidate Support opportunities.

  9. As soon as your portfolio materials arrive, begin reviewing the standards and portfolio entries and planning for the year. Many teachers have found that they had to limit other "extra" commitments in order to be successful with the process.

  10. Send the remaining application fees to the National Board by January 31, 2001: $1,000 if you have been selected to receive a subsidy or $2,000 for all other candidates.

  11. Complete and mail your portfolio to NBPTS so that it is received by April 16, 2001. Portfolios for the Early and Middle Childhood/Art, Early and Middle Childhood/Physical Education, and Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/Physical Education should be received by June 5, 2001. After receiving your portfolio, NBPTS will mail you information about the one-day Assessment Center.
