About
TEACHER INCENTIVE AWARD PROGRAM
AB 858 (Davis) established the
California Certification Incentive Program in January, 1999. This
bill granted a one-time $10,000 award to California public school
teachers who became Nationally Board Certified. On July 5, 2000, Governor
Davis signed an education reform package that included Senate Bill
1666 (Alarcon). This bill makes it possible to continue granting the
one-time $10,000 award for teachers who become Nationally Board Certified
in the coming year.
SB 1666 also provides an additional
$20,000 to those Nationally Board Certified teachers who commit
to teach in a low-performing school for four years. Awards will
be granted in annual payments of $5,000 at the end of the year for
four years. A "low-performing school" is defined as a school in
the bottom half of all schools based on the Academic Performance
Index (API). Teachers will have to apply to their districts for
the awards.
