ASSESSMENT PROCESS
For each of the certificate areas, NBPTS offers a performance-based assessment that takes about one year to complete. The year-long assessment process includes two components: (1) developing a portfolio which includes videotapes of classroom instruction, an in-depth exploration of the assessment and monitoring of students' progress, and reflective narratives on the goals and methods of their teaching: and (2) going to an assessment center to take a one-day set of essay examinations focused on content knowledge and age-appropriate pedagogy. It does take a considerable amount of time-one teacher said she spent about 180 hours going over student work, reviewing videotapes, and "writing, writing, writing."

NBPTS has issued a set of teaching standards that describe the accomplished level of teaching for different subject areas and grade-levels. The assessment process for each area is guided by these standards. Please see the The Standards page at the NBPTS Web site for the certificate area that applies to your teaching situation.

For more in-depth information about the assessment and scoring processes, please see the Seeking National Board Certification page at the NBPTS Web site.
