CANDIDATE SUBSIDY PROGRAM APPLICATION
The Candidate Subsidy Program for 2000-2001 will provide 197 teachers with a $1,000 subsidy to offset the $2,300 application fee required to participate in the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) advanced certification process. To apply, please do the following:
  1. Order an NBPTS application and Candidates' Guide from NBPTS by calling 1-800-22TEACH.

  2. Complete the NBPTS application and send it with a nonrefundable check for $300 payable to NBPTS to: NBPTS, c/o Bank of America, Illinois, P.O. Box 99406, Chicago, IL 60693. NBPTS will mail you the portfolio materials once they have received both your NBPTS application and your $300 payment (institutional check, personal check, or money order). The NBPTS application and initial payment must be received by December 1, 2000. Sending in your application and check early will ensure that you receive your portfolio materials soon enough to get a head start on the portfolio. Plan to receive your portfolio in summer 2000.

  3. Complete the Candidate Subsidy Program application below. Make sure to include your Candidate ID # from your NBPTS application.

  4. Prepare a resume of no more than two pages that includes a history of employment and describes one or more contributions to the professional community. Also required is a response of one page or less to the following prompt: "I understand that many individuals who are successful in obtaining National Board Certification have received collegial support and financial assistance from a number of sources. My plan to obtain collegial support and financial assistance is . . ."

  5. Send this Candidate Subsidy Program application, the resume, and the description of your plan to obtain support postmarked by September 29, 2000 to:

    Maria Quezada
    California Department of Education
    Professional Development Unit
    721 Capitol Mall - 4th Floor
    Sacramento, CA 95814

  6. Applicants for the Candidate Subsidy Program will be notified by October 31, 2000 if they have been selected to receive a subsidy. Selections will be made randomly by region; 20% will be reserved for teachers in hard-to-staff schools. The remaining application fees are due by January 31, 2001: $1,000 if you have been selected for a subsidy or $2,000 for all other candidates.
