IECIS has provided professional development opportunities for more than 25 years; serving K-12 teachers, students, and school districts in San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
IECIS programs and activities are planned in collaboration with the IECIS Advisory Board, university faculty, teacher leaders, and school district administrators with the goals of enhancing content knowledge and improving instructional practices that can lead to increased achievement for all students.
All programs address the California History-Social Science Content Standards while integrating the English Language Arts and English Language Development Standards.
IECIS programs and activities are developed to examine contemporary and historical events from a range of disciplinary perspectives in the social sciences and the humanities. The programs are designed for teacher participants and students to:
• Learn about the diverse cultures, histories, and traditions of the world.
• Understand the many forces that have shaped historical and contemporary events.
• See the interconnectedness of people, ideas, and experiences across time and space.
IECIS builds teacher leadership through in-depth experiences with history-social science academic
content and instructional skills; and participation in a community of scholars that explore
international studies in a range of activities over extended periods of time.
IECIS is a recognized leader in the statewide network for serving school communities with high proportions of English Learners with the annual content-area literacy institute.
