Since 1977, the San Diego Area Writing Project provides opportunities in professional development for teaching practitioners, literacy coaches, administrators, curriculum specialists, and community college and university instructors. Located within the Center for Research in Educational Equity, Assessment & Teaching Excellence (CREATE) at UC San Diego, the SDAWP is one of 17 California Writing Project sites dedicated to the improvement of student learning through the effective teaching of writing. As an affiliate of the National Writing Project, the oldest and largest professional development project in the U.S., we use a teacher-teaching-teachers model that draws on the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of successful classroom teachers in all disciplines. Research studies demonstrate the success of the NWP model in improving student writing and achievement.
