UCLA Writing Project

Welcome to the UCLA Writing Project, a site of the California Writing Project and National Writing Project since 1977. We work with teachers of all disciplines and levels, helping them expand their repertoires as both teachers and writers. We believe that all can become good writers and experience the satisfaction of capturing thoughts in just the right words. Visit our website to view our vast range of programs including enhancing the abilities of English learners, assessing student writing, differentiating instruction and leveraging the talents Los Angeles area students bring into the classroom.

Who We Are

Welcome to the UCLA Writing Project, a site of the California Writing Project and the National Writing Project since 1977. We work with elementary through university teachers of all disciplines, who collaborate on finding the best strategies for helping their own students become good, enthusiastic writers. We focus on all students, including English learners, students in under-resourced schools, and students who are among the highest achievers.

The heart of our Project is the Summer Invitational, where we gather 20 talented teachers to share promising approaches in the teaching of writing, to consider the theory, research and practice of key educators and to work on their own writing. These are the teachers who lead our many professional development workshops, speak at our two annual conferences, teach at our Young Writers workshops and other programs for teachers.

 Our core beliefs

All students—not just some—can become good writers, able to articulate their thoughts so others have full access.

Classroom teachers have tremendous expertise.  Because of the knowledge they gain by working with students every day, they are the best teachers of other teachers.

Teachers need to engage in writing and write with their students—side by side.
Writers experience great satisfaction when they succeed in capturing their thoughts in words.
