The California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP) is one of nine California Subject Matter Projects working in California and is governed through the University of California's Office of the President. The CRLP mission marks student achievement as a central goal and teacher leadership and quality professional development as the primary vehicles to serve this goal.

The CRLP works to improve student achievement of students in grades Pre-K - 12 by providing high quality professional development institutes and productive leadership training that both deepens the content knowledge of teachers and develops teacher leadership, in accordance with both the adopted State Board of Education Standards and the California Reading and Language Arts Framework.

An additional goal of the CRLP is to create a bridge between the academic world of the university and the world of classroom and students. This relationship allows teachers to develop and improve their teaching practices, and improve their student’s achievement, by concretely linking the theory and research of the academic world to their classrooms. It is   because of this collaboration that productive decisions have been made as regards both the content and design of our varying PreK-12 staff development venues.

With our mission in mind, and in order to meet the Reading needs of California's diverse student population, an important focus to all the CRLP work has been California's English Language Learner population. Included in CRLP’s inservice models are institutes directed to the needs of students and teachers of both Structured English Immersion Program, and waivered Bilingual Programs.
