The project’s origins date to the mid-1970s when universities with international affairs capacities expanded efforts to share resources with schools and communities in the regions and service areas. CISP was legislatively established as a statewide network in 1985, and was integrated into the California Subject Matter Project (CSMP) in 1992. Regional project sites are located in and sponsored by four CSU institutions and two private institutions. A seventh site is in transition in 2008-09. The sites are directed by experienced practitioners and teacher leaders and supported by communities of academic specialists committed to teacher professional growth in international studies.
