California Foreign Language Project California Foreign Language Project

IMPACTFL

Initiative for Model Professional Activities and Capacity-building for Teachers of Foreign Languages

Under the umbrella of the California Subject Matter Project (CSMP), the California Foreign Language Project (CFLP), aims to support World Language and Culture educators through comprehensive, systematic, and collaborative P-16 professional development programs that promote effective learning of languages and cultures in California’s schools.

Project Initiative for Model Professional Activities and Capacity-building for Teachers of Foreign Languages (IMPACTFL) primary goal is to refine the CFLP project model and practices for potential national replication. In particular, IMPACTFL focuses great effort in developing materials and effective practices for teaching less-commonly taught, but critical languages and cultures such as Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese.

Project IMPACTFL will develop: (1) Manuals for replicating and implementing the CFLP professional development model, including adapting the model to local contexts; (2) Curriculum and background materials for supporting the professional development for new teachers of Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese; and (3) Hands-on professional development materials to be used at Institutes of selected language educators and professional development specialists from across the nation who will assemble to learn how to replicate the CFLP model, as well as be able to familiarize themselves with support efforts for teachers of Arabic, Chinese, and Japanese.
