Program: Workshop at UC San Diego: SDAWP Reading Like a Writer K-12 2012

Introduces teachers to the concept of mentor text—using high-quality writing from a variety of authors to support, engage and enable all students to take ownership of their writing. Drawing from classroom resources, teacher participants will discover how to take advantage of the time already invested in reading instruction to teach writing. Participants will learn to use mentor texts to analyze texts for the qualities of effective writing; pinpoint specific revision strategies and tools; teach grammar and writing conventions; and, explore characteristics of specific genres to inform student writing.
