A Focused Approach to Frontloading English Language Instruction for Core Reading Programs, Grades K-6

Where and When: Focused Approach to Frontloading English Language Institutes may be offered across the CRLP network in the summer and throughout the academic year. Program scheduling is flexible, but it is preferable to schedule the days over a period of time to allow for sufficient implementation, processing, and reflection.

Standards, Content, and Grade Level: This program is designed for K-6 elementary teachers and is aligned with the ELA and ELD Standards for these grades. It is designed to provide support in the effective use of core reading materials, to ensure participation and ultimate success for English learners across levels of proficiency.

Program Description: These institutes were designed in response to requests from districts and schools around the state as they strive to close the achievement gap and ensure that all students are able to participate fully and successfully in the core language arts programs. A Focused Approach to Frontloading English Language Instruction for Open Court Reading and Houghton Mifflin Reading are professional development institutes that CRLP designed for California educators who have English learners in their classrooms and who are implementing California SBE-adopted reading programs. The overarching purpose of these institutes is to prepare teachers to effectively teach academic language throughout the instructional day, linking language instruction to reading instruction in order to provide access to grade-level curricula. This includes language instruction before, during, and after the reading lesson with multiple opportunities for structured language practice and application.

Additional Information: Institute participants receive a Teacher’s Handbook that includes:

-  A scope and sequence of levels of English proficiency

-  Collaborative learning strategies giving students practice in the language being taught

-  Graphic organizers linked to language lesson objectives

-  A tool to help teachers prompt EL students to produce language at different levels of proficiency, linked to various language functions

-  Practical strategies for maximizing the use of the EL support materials contained in each reading program

Funding: This is a fee-for-service professional development program. Possible sources of funding for schools and districts include:

-  AB466/SB472 (80-hour follow-up practicum)

-  Reading First (80-hour follow-up practicum)

-  NCLB – Title I, II, III
