CMP PROGRAMS

The CMP offers a variety of mathematics programs designed specifically to meet the needs of teachers, schools, and/or districts and aligned with the California Mathematics Content Standards and Framework. These programs are funded from many sources including CMP funds, grants (including CaMSP, NSF, and CPEC Improving Teacher Quality grants), district categorical funds, fee-for-service, and school/district contracts. CMP sponsors intensive professional development institutes, academic year programs, academic year support, and other programs. The content and focus of these programs are designed in collaboration with schools, districts, and teachers in response to identified needs. Many of the CMP efforts include a combination of the above aspects that form a coherent whole. Programs also target specific teacher groups such as new teachers, teachers from hard-to-staff schools, teachers in urban or rural settings, teachers in a specific grade span, and teachers seeking certification.<

Intensive Professional Development Programs
These programs are designed in all grade spans and can include specific mathematics content, English Language Development in mathematics, assessment, textbook implementation, use of tools or technology to enhance student learning, and/or leadership development.

Academic Year Programs
These programs include a series of monthly full-day workshops or after-school workshops, a series of after-school workshops, focus groups targeting specific content or processes, or weekend retreats.

Academic Year Classroom Support
These programs include Lesson Study, coaching, and networking through communities of practice.

Other Programs
These programs include Young Mathematicians’ Institutes (for students), programs for administrators, parents or paraprofessionals, and academies (professional development for teachers in conjunction with student lab schools).

PROGRAM FEATURES

Workshops, institutes, and ongoing professional development include exemplary teaching practices for teachers that effectively target the improvement of K-12 students’ mathematical proficiency through:

  • Collaboration between mathematics faculty, mathematics education faculty, and K-12 mathematics teachers and teacher leaders.
  • Balanced mathematics programs that include all five strands of mathematical proficiency: conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, strategic competence, adaptive reasoning, and productive disposition (from Adding It Up: Helping Children Learn Mathematics).
  • Mathematics tasks that have high cognitive demand.
  • Student empowerment, by developing mathematical reasoning through gathering data, analyzing evidence, and building arguments to support hypotheses.
  • Strategies for working with English Learners.
