SD Area Writing Project: Leonardo da Vinci Charter School: Common Core Prof Dev K-5

The SDAWP will provide a total of ten (10) hours of professional development for up to 15 K-6 classroom teachers with the goal of developing instructional approaches for improving student writing and academic achievement. Teachers will examine a variety of resources for use as potential mentors/models for students, build knowledge about the qualities and characteristics of effective writing, develop differentiated writing instruction for all students (including English language learners, GATE, and struggling writers), and explore ways to meaningfully integrate reading and writing instruction into the curriculum. Teachers will learn to develop student-driven writing for authentic purposes; integrate the CA Common Core State Standards across content areas; and, scaffold writing instruction using current classroom materials and mentor texts.
