Modeling and Designing Resources for Opinion/Argument Writing: Reading the Word and the World (8-12)
Activities (1)
Reading the Word and the World
In this workshop, participants will learn a strategy for teaching closer reading with increased engagement and social relevancy. By analyzing a series of politically- and socially-themed visual texts using a scaffolded technique, participants will uncover subtexts (beneath-the-surface meanings) about the world in which we live. The latter part of the workshop will focus on using this skill as a bridging technique to teach close reading of more traditional texts, such as poems or print literature. By teaching young people to closely read texts with more of a critical lens, the hope is that they will develop a deeper awareness of the world around them.
