About UCLA-SP
Location:
The UCLA Science Project is based in Center X, Graduate School of Education and Information Studies (GSE & IS), 1320 Moore Hall, UCLA. Center X is the crossroads for UCLA's pre-service Teacher Education Program, UCLA's professional development programs for practicing professional educators, and UCLA's EdD program in educational leadership. All programs work collaboratively with UCLA faculty, K-12 educators, and community college educators to provide rigorous, high-status pre- and in-service professional education and improve urban schooling for Los Angeles' children.
Goal:
The goal of the UCLA Science Project is to design and implement programs that identify, develop, and promote strategies that make good science instruction accessible to all students whatever their academic, cultural, or socio-economic backgrounds. These programs are designed to support teachers as they strengthen their own science instructional practices, provide resources for schools as they strengthen science programs at school sites, and provide a collegial network for science educators from all levels to share expertise and new ideas.
Philosophy:
The UCLA Science Project believes that all programs must practice what they preach. Institutes, workshops, interactive reunion seminars and forums model science education reform practices that address the diverse needs of today's science teachers and students. Programs follow the constructivist approach to teaching and learning, and they are designed to correlate with state and national guidelines including the California State Framework, Project 2001's Benchmarks for Science Literacy, and the National Standards for Science Education.
Programs:
UCLA's science program directors work with schools and districts to develop science programs that address specific teacher and school needs. Since the most effective programs are those developed by the teachers who are actually going to benefit from them, we ask that all discussions include teacher representatives. The academic-year programs support teachers as they integrate their new expertise into effective science instruction for their students and work with colleagues to strengthen their school's science instructional program. The intensive institutes give teacher participants an opportunity to work with each other, teacher leaders, university faculty, and experts in the field. Participants develop their background content, identify and share effective instructional strategies, and learn how to build their instruction around student inquiry.
