About
The mission of SEASAND is to provide professional development to science educators for the purpose of improving student understanding in science. Our vision is to build a network of educators, scientists, and other science professionals that will work with teachers in the San Diego area to become competent and confident through a rich understanding of the content knowledge aligned with California State Science Standards.
SEASAND work focuses on middle school science teachers from state-designated low-performing schools. Based on this target audience and the student population of San Diego County, we have four main goals of professional development:
· Increasing science content knowledge,
· Modeling of constructivist and inquiry-based pedagogies,
· Teaching science to English Language Learners, and
· Developing teacher leaders through a lesson study model.
These goals are accomplished primarily in 2-week summer institutes. The Lesson Study program also involves follow-up days in the fall of the academic year. Finally, teachers have the opportunity to attend science lectures once a month through the Perspectives on Science Series at Point Loma Nazarene University.
