English Learner Initiative
The California Science Project has taken a leadership position in the
delivery of high quality standards-based science instruction to the English
Learner (EL) population. As we move forward in planning professional
development opportunities, CSP will continue to sharpen its focus on the
academic success of EL by:
- Focusing on the potential of each step in the scientific process for
academic language development at each level of proficiency in listening,
speaking, reading and writing.
- Promoting changes in the learning environment of the science classroom
to make it more supportive of EL success.
- Incorporating into instruction what we have learned from case studies
of former EL who have become science professionals.
- Exploring the unique relationship between the sciences and the EL
population - history, trends, desired goals, and international perspectives.
- Sharing among regional sites an array of materials focusing on successful
approaches.
- Developing assessment items appropriate for students at various grade
levels and diverse English Language Development proficiency levels.
- Collaborating with regional leadership teams to strengthen our knowledge
base and professional development delivery capacity regarding EL.
- Writing an instructional handbook for teachers on effective practices
for EL in the science classroom.
