The Power of Art
For the past 10 years Peralta Elementary School has been a model site for arts integration in the Bay Area. Located in North Oakland, the Peralta campus is a testament to the arts program that has become part of the fabric of the schools’ core curriculum. Artists in Residence Trena Noval and Ellen Oppenhiemer, along with teachers Kelly Rozario and Pam Lucker, will present model visual arts and writing curriculum projects which incorporate creative writing, video animation, drawing and environmental installations that are folded into Peralta’s Language Arts, Science and Social Studies curriculum. Peralta is an Alameda County Arts Anchor School and this year was designated a national Arts Active Laboratory School site through a partnership with Harvard’s Project Zero, California College for the Arts, Center for Art and Public Life and Alameda County Office of Education.

Integrating Art In the Sciences
Students will use art to connect and apply key science concepts, while applying what they have learned in the visual arts across subject areas. This will develop skills in problem solving, communicating and learn the art of visual representation. Students apply what they have learned in writing science journals and observations.
For Grade Levels 3-5
Misuk Nam, Ohlone Elementary, WCCUSD
Life in Unnatural Community
How do animals adapt to new habitats? How do animals and plants help each other to survive in the community? This session will focus on how creative arts help students to visualize animal adaptation and how to make predictions about animal survival in the new environment.
See individual CSMP websites for their workshops.
