BASP Newsletter Spring 2001
Message from the Director:
Greetings to all and a happy spring. Just as the lengthening days and warming
temperatures suggest new life and growth, we at BASP are pleased to announce
two new programs that we are able to offer Bay Area teachers this spring and
summer.
The first is our Astrophysics Institute,
Interactive Journey Through the Universe, offered for secondary teachers for
a total of 40 hours spread over two weekends in March and April. This program
introduces teachers to an array of curricular materials and technological tools
to address Earth Science standards dealing with astronomy. The centerpiece for
this institute is the interactive internet-based program Hands-On Universe.
The institute will be led by UC Professor Carl Pennypacker.
The second new program in the BASP arena is our Science Education and English
Development (SEED) institute, supported by the Governor's Professional Development
Initiatives. Offered the last week of June, this interactive, garden-based program
uses science as a means to help students develop their English language skills.
For more information and an application form, see SEED.
Of course, we are also holding our traditional two-week Summer Institute, this year focusing on the
Earth Sciences standards. Held 6-17 August at LHS, this Institute includes an
array of interactive science curricula, teacher-generated investigations, demonstrations,
discussions, standards mapping, guest presentations, field trips, and leadership
development activities.
Finally, we invite you to join us for the finalBASP Saturday Seminar on April 28 at Albany Middle School.
Thanks again to all of you for the wonderful work you are doing with your students,
colleagues, and communities. As the newness of spring creeps into the air, may
you also be refreshed and rejuvenated in your endeavors.

BASP Newsletter Spring 2000
Message from the Director:
Welcome to the first official electronic issue of the Bay Area Science Project
(BASP) newsletter. We are excited about the potential of this format to deliver
information that is updated more frequently, as well as being able to post a
variety of information that does not reproduce well in a paper version. In this
issue you will notice articles from teachers, photographs of activities going
on in our BASP schools, links with other relevant websites, and our usual announcements
about professional development opportunities of interest to you and your colleagues.
Please feel free to email us with your reactions to this issue, especially if
you'd like to participate by posting something of your own that reflects the
impact of BASP on your professional activities. Also, be sure to check out our
News page for current information
about summer programs and activities.
We know that the year is winding down and most of you are looking forward to
vacation and institutes. Congratulations on another year of strengthening the
interests and abilities of children in the wonders of the natural world and
the power of scientific thinking. Enjoy your summer, wherever it leads you!
