About
OVERVIEW
The California Physical Education-Health Project began in 1994, with the
statewide offices located on the California State University, Fullerton
campus. Under the direction of Margaret Elliot, CPE-HP is providing teachers
and other professionals opportunities to create a deeper understanding of
the two disciplines on which these subjects are based. Through readings,
discussions, and reflections, CPE-HP participants will examine the commonalties
and distinctions of the two subjects, ultimately to sharpen presentation
of content to increase the impact on instruction for students. Teacher leadership
is promoted through participating in self-reflective activities (writing,
critical discussion, research), coaching or mentoring project colleagues,
and filling a variety of project leadership positions.
In July, 1995, CPE-HP held the inaugural summer leadership institute
on the Fullerton campus. This was the first opportunity for participants
to experience, in the CPE-HP setting, some of the principles and tenets
of the California Subject Matter Projects, including teacher leadership,
diversity and equity issues, engaging in intensive studies of the subject
matter, long term investment in professional development, and creating
opportunities for teacher leaders to reach out to large numbers of their
colleagues.
Over these past years CPE-HP has enjoyed continued support by the teacher
participants, site directors and advisory board members. To date CPE-HP
has served 700 teachers throughout the state of California.
Presently, CPE-HP continues to foster professional development for teachers
by offering three fully operating sites, BayPEHP at San Jose State University;
NorthPEHP at Chico State and Costa Del Sur at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo,
as well as an active recruitment of planning sites around California.
We hope to expand programs into all regions of the state to provide access
to our program for all interested teachers
