CPE-HP supports a growing network of statewide leaders through its three regional sites. At the heart of the project, distinguished teacher leaders deliver cutting edge programs in accordance with the California State Physical Education and Health Content Standards. Using a "teachers-teaching-teachers" model, CPE-HP offers programs that impact the way professionals think about and approach their work with students. A constructivist approach allows teachers to learn by doing, examine current health and physical education issues and research, and engage in meaningful dialogue with experts to improve practice, so that students are given the best opportunity to learn how to live an active healthy life.

This collaborative network is dedicated to providing the highest quality physical education and health instruction, with a special focus on meeting the needs of English learners (as articulated through the Common Core State Standards), native speakers with low literacy, and students from economically disadvantaged communities. Headquartered at San Jose State University, CPE-HP belongs to a larger network of discipline-specific programs known as the California Subject Matter Projects, administered by the University of California, Office of the President.
