General
Information
The Santa Clara Valley Mathematics Project serves both Santa Clara and
San Mateo Counties. Based at San José State University, the leadership
team consists of Faculty Advisor and Site Director Dr. Joanne Rossi
Becker, co-director Dianne Pors, and major staff David Foster. In
addition, we have three liaison staff members who worked with 15 lab
sites in summer 2001; these staff members vary, but this summer are
Marjorie Trainer, a coach from San Carlos ESD; Barbara Schallau a mentor teacher in East Side Union High School District; and, Carol Mar a Principal in Berryessa School District.
Participant teachers came from 19 districts in Santa Clara and San Mateo
Counties in summer 2001.
During the summer of 2001, the SCVMP will hold a 15- day summer institute
for 37 teacher leaders. These days are separated into three segments:
single days in May; a week of intensive institute in June; and then the final
three days in August. These 37 teacher leaders, in teams of two to three, then lead
a week of professional development for teachers whowill teach in 15
summer lab schools. Teachers taught in teams of two, with one being
paid by the district hosting the lab school, and the other by a grant from
The Noyce Foundation. Lab schools will vary from 2-5 weeks. Teacher
leaders conducted additional professional development for 120 team
teachers in the afternoons after the children left school. In addition to
the summer activities, we will have a number of follow-up activities with
guest speakers. This past year we have had Jo Boaler, Susan Jo Russell,
Catherine Lewis, Lucy West, and Deborah Ball. The SCVMP also
collaborates with 29 school districts and The Noyce Foundation on a
Mathematics Assessment Collaborative, which next March will provide
performance assessment in grades 3-10. We plan this same model of
activities for 2002-2003.
