MPDI
All California Mathematics Project (CMP) sites provide Mathematics Professional Development Institutes (MPDI). Although statewide funding for the MPDI no longer exists, MPDI programs are still offered to schools and districts funded by other sources (e.g., California Math Science Partnerships—CaMSP, AB 466, CPEC Improving Teacher Quality Grants, NSF, and school and district categorical funds).
Although most schools and districts use Article 3 approved AB 466 providers, the MPDI sites are approved Article 2 providers. However, most of the AB 466 efforts at the CMP/MPDI sites center on the follow-up 80 hours. Possible programs for these 80 hours include the following:
- English Language Development in Mathematics Content: this program includes specific strategies to provide access to the mathematics content in state-adopted textbooks for English Learners and infusing these strategies in English Language Development in mathematics instruction to increase academic language.
- Online Lesson Study Course, Lesson Student through a Mathematics Lens: this program provides teachers the opportunity to learn about the process and implementation of Lesson Study using their textbooks. Lesson Study provides teachers the opportunity to focus in-depth on student thinking, student learning, student understanding, and student misconceptions.
- Mathematics content in targeted strands: this program provides an in-depth and conceptual approach to mathematics content that is difficult for students to grasp and provides a strong foundation for teachers to be more effective in teaching the mathematics content of the California Mathematics Content Standards.
