About The California Global Education Project

The California Global Education Project (CGEP), formerly the California International Studies Project, is a statewide network that connects universities, schools, and districts in collaborative efforts to increase K-12 teacher competence in cultural and global studies. CGEP promotes the development of global competence and agency for all students. Through professional learning programs that engage academic scholars and teacher leaders in planning, implementation, and evaluation, CGEP seeks to improve geographic and historical as well as contemporary knowledge of 21st century realities that are fundamentally altering the international landscape and domestic affairs.CGEP utilizes its university-sponsored, statewide, and regional network of five sites to conceptualize and conduct standards-based programs to bridge cultures, cultivate equity, and provide access to high-quality learning experiences for California's diverse student population. CGEP engages teachers in a range of professional growth experiences designed to strengthen participants' classroom instructional practice, including summer institutes and school year programs designed to explore global themes, provide cross-cultural exchange, and support student inquiry, literacy, and agency. The focus is on world history and geography in a global education context and on cultures, world regions, and contemporary global issues with an interdisciplinary emphasis. This collaborative network is dedicated to providing the highest quality professional development with a special focus on meeting the needs of English learners and students from economically disadvantaged communities. Headquartered at San Diego State University, CGEP belongs to a larger network of discipline-specific programs known as the California Subject Matter Projects, administered by the University of California, Office of the President. Current CGEP Advisory Board Members California State University: Dr. Kristine Dennehy, CSU Fullerton Professor, History DepartmentCommission of Teacher Credentialing: Dr. Jeff Hittenberger, Chief Academic Officer, Orange County Department of EducationGovernor's Office: Miriam Hutchins, Retired North Bay International Studies Project Director, Sonoma State University (Board Co-chair)Professional Organization: Lawrence Osen, Retired Teacher, California Geographic AllianceState Board of Education: Amanda Bush, Teacher, Norte Vista High School, Alvord Unified School DistrictState Superintendent's Office: Rod Septka, Teacher, Mill Valley Middle SchoolUniversity of California: Dr. Christena Turner, UC San Diego Associate Professor, Sociology Department and Director of UC San Diego Japanese Studies Program (Board Chair)
